Connecting Beyond the Classroom

Despite their differences, rural, urban and even suburban educators often face a common problem: distance can isolate them from working with partners who could help their students. In this video, Michigan Tech University GEAR UP coordinator Liz Fujita shares how she’s using EduGuide to mentor students in remote rural schools in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula:

The EduGuide platform enables Michigan Tech University to mentor students on the path toward college, even when schedules and distance would otherwise get in the way. In real-time, they can track how students are progressing on their activities, and offer coaching or a gentle nudge and cheer them on as they achieve their goals – all from the convenience of their internet-connected cell phones.

“You can tailor it to whatever you’re trying to get across,” Fujita said, reporting that her students are more honest and open about their lives and passions on EduGuide than they normally are in the classroom. “It’s kind of fun, you’re going through and you’re seeing students grow and express themselves.”
